Service Committee

Our next meeting will be the first Saturday in August, which is August 7.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Bread for the World offering of letters in April. We sent over 50 letters to Congress. You can continue to advocate for our hungry neighbors by going to the Bread for the World website at www.bread.org and register to receive email updates. The updates often include free phone numbers to call Congress so you can continue to lobby for people living in poverty.

Hubble IMAX

Change your view of our universe! View and discuss Hubble IMAX playing at the St. Louis Science Center noon on Saturday, July 31st. This will be our second gathering of 20-somethings. This IMAX movie is inspiring and thought provoking. Experience Hubble with peers from your family of faith and then discuss how it affected you.

For the group rate we need 10 people reserved 10 days prior to the event, so please RSVP. Contact Jessica with questions (jessica.rowley@stsclareandfrancis.org).

Sponsored by Sts. Clare & Francis and Evangelical UCC

Sign up for Synod

We have a great opportunity to attend the ECC Synod in the convenience of our own home town! Come and get to know representatives from other parishes in the Ecumenical Catholic Communion.

Registration information for Synod 2010 can be found online at the ECC website.

The Synod will be held from Tuesday evening,
October 26 through Saturday morning, October 30, at the Doubletree Westport Hotel.

Remember, any proposed legislation, resolution or discussion items need to be submitted ahead of time to our ECC chancellor, George von Stamwitz, gvonstamwitz@armstrongteasdale.com before June 30.

summer book discussion

Join us every Thursday evening at 7:00pm to discuss this stimulating book, Quest for the Living God by Elizabeth Johnson. On July 8st we will gather at Evangelical UCC to discuss Chapter 6. If you order the book through Left Bank Books through the Recommended Reading page on our website, Sts. Clare & Francis will receive a portion of the sale. Come when you can. Chapter summaries and discussion questions are available at our SCF Forum.

Wednesday Mass on summer vacation

Wednesday, May 26th will be the last Wednesday 5:30 Mass until the Fall. Join us at Evangelical UCC next week and stay tuned for exciting summer programming (i.e. a book club, barbeques, etc).

lectionary discussion forum

We all bring the gospel of our lives to illumine the gospel we hear proclaimed at Mass. To facilitate the sharing of this richness in our midst, we are now hosting a lectionary discussion forum on our SCF website. Each Monday the weekend readings will be posted. You can offer thoughts, stories, pictures, web links, etc. This is a wonderful way to chew on the Word with one another and stoke the creative fire for our preparing homilists. You will need to register for web access to view this forum. It’s easy – visit our registration page. Questions? Contact Jessica.

Save the Date: The ECC Is Coming to St. Louis!

October 26 through the 29 of this year, we will be hosting delegates and visitors from all over the ECC for our third Synod since the signing of the ECC constitution in 2003. This will be a great opportunity for our members and friends to get to know the ECC and her members from all over the United States. Our own George von Stamwitz, Chancellor of the ECC, is scheduled to be the preacher at our final Eucharist on Friday evening, the 29th. We have a local team of organizers, headed up by Therese Gabriel and Judy DeFrank and assisted by Paul and Sue Nauert, who are hard at work setting up the organization required to make this happen. Ann Leible will be in charge of the music for this event. Many others of us have already committed to help. We will probably be tapping the majority of our membership to assure a smoothly running event. Whether you are “tasked” or not, please save the dates for a great opportunity to put Sts. Clare & Francis in the context of the national movement it is. More information including registration links will follow in the months ahead.

Why We Serve and Sell Fair Trade Coffee

Agriculture is big business. The U.S. consumes one-fifth of the world’s coffee, making us its largest global consumer. BUT most coffee agricultural workers toil in “sweatshopsin the fields.” Coffee prices have plummeted and with markets this low, many farmers cannot maintain their families and land. Large companies maintain a high retail price, pocketing large profits from the low commodity prices.

Fair Trade is a viable solution. A minimum price paid to the grower cooperative is guaranteed. The importer also contracts to assist in other ways such as providing affordable credit and technical assistance.

By purchasing certified Fair Trade coffee and other products, we are changing the world, not by charity or handouts, but simply by a process of GIVING A FAIR EXCHANGE. Fair Trade builds right relationships between us buyers and the growers and sellers, relationships that are rooted in the principles of human dignity, social justice and global solidarity.

Why not participate? It’s a win-win!!

LOOK FOR DELICIOUS FAIR TRADE COFFEE FOR SALE AFTER MASS ON SATURDAYS.

If you need coffee before that contact Sue Stolze scstolze@sbcglobal.net.
